1. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) / Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)

Project Title: Introduction of  the InterLab information management system to eight laboratories working towards accreditation

Country: South Africa, Namibia, Cote d’Ivoire, Malaysia, Colombia, Peru

Dates: 2000 – 2002

Supporting the implementation of a quality management system leading to accreditation to the OIE Standard/ISO 17025 Standard. The provision of practical assistance to managerial and technical staff in the development of quality system documentation, e.g. quality manual, SOPs, work instructions, job descriptions, etc. Preparation of training material and training of staff in ISO standard principles, their application and implementation.

The installation of the InterLab laboratory information management system was a key component in the process of preparing these laboratories for accreditation. An additional consultancy with FAO/IAEA to the Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL), Namibia implemented a quality system and development of a quality pathway leading to CVL gaining accreditation to ISO 9001:2000 standard.

For the Latin American laboratories the program was translated in to the Spanish language.

 2. Brazil

Project Title: Introduction of  the InterLab information management system to five veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Brazil

Country: Brazil

Dates: 2000 – 2002

Following visits to  all 10  official (5 government and 5 accredited) diagnostic laboratories across Brazil,  InterLab has operated since 2001 in the 3 main government laboratories (Lapa Recife, Lapa Belem, Lapa Sao Paulo) and 2 of the accredited laboratories (State lab of Mato Grosso) .

Notifiable disease reports from the laboratories are sent immediately to appropriate personnel in the national headquarters of the veterinary services in Brasilia. A central database is updated daily by reports from the participating laboratories to allow central analysis of  the results from the laboratories across the country.

The program operates in the Portuguese language.
